Daylight Saving Time – Spring 2016

Daylight Saving Time will start this weekend, March 13, 2016 at 2:00am! All clocks will need to be turned forward one hour to 3:00am. To help you remember, keep in mind these handy sayings: “Spring Forward” and “Fall Back”. In the spring time we move forward an hour to allow for more light in the evening. And in the fall, we turn the clocks back an hour so it will be lighter in the morning.

The purpose of Daylight Saving Time is to make better use of daylight and converse energy. The U.S. Department of Transportation conducted a study in 1975 that showed Daylight Saving Time reduces the entire country’s electricity usage by a small but significant amount, about one percent each day, because less electricity is used for lighting and appliances. In the average home, 25% of electricity usage is by lighting and small appliances typically in the evening when families are home. By moving the clocks ahead one hour, this allows for less electricity to be used in the evening and decreases the amount of electricity consumed each day. However, it’s being discussed that DST no longer conserves energy. Since it is lighter longer, many are arguing that more energy is being used to power air conditioners when they get home from work. Currently, there is no study to prove this theory.

Not all countries participate in Daylight Saving Time. Areas that are located near the equator do not participate since days and nights are nearly the same length (12 hours each).
